Psalms 51:
A Prayer for forgiveness and renewal

1. A Prayer for Forgiveness (vv 1-9)

David’s profound awareness of his sin and its true nature

Three words describe the sin he has committed

1.Transgression (pesha)- Crossing a forbidden boundary/ a deliberate rebellion
2.Iniquity (awon)- “perversion” and refers to what we call “original sin” or the “depravity” of our natures
3.Sin (chattath)- “falling short’ or ‘missing the mark’

David’s trust in the character of God (vv. 1-2)

Mercy of God

Unfailing Love

Great Compassion

Three things David wanted God to do

1.”cleanse me with hyssop” (v. 7)
2.“Wash me” (v. 7)
3.“Blot out all my iniquity” (v. 9)

2. A Prayer for Inner Renewal (vv10-12)

1.  Create a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit

2. Do not cast me away

3. Restore the joy of salvation

Create- ‘bara’- something only God can do

Steadfast- koon’- to be firm, unwavering

Steadfast means “fixed in purpose, direction and resolution”
