Real Humility

As we continue with the subject of Humility, I am reminded of a quote of Dr. D.L. Moody. He said:
-          Beginning of greatness is to be little
-          Increase of greatness is to be less
-          Perfection of greatness is to be nothing.
This is exactly what Jesus did. While he was everything being in heaven and co-creator of the Universe, he left his heavenly abode and came into this world to become nothing.

Today, we will reflect on the incarnation of Jesus. We as sinners never deserved any grace but were heading for judgment. At this time, Jesus voluntarily left the highest position of the universe and went to the very lowest position of the Universe on Earth. It makes us realize that no amount of personal sacrifice we make can ever match up with what Jesus did for us. As it is written in John- 1:14, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” He was God but did not consider equality with God. Paul also says that He made himself nothing and completely emptied himself (Philippians – 2:7). Further, He went on to become a servant (Philippians – 2:7-8). A servant occupies the lowest position. So the journey Jesus undertook was from the position of a King, the Lord of the Universe to the lowest position of a servant. Isn’t it amazing and does it not defy our logic and rationality? That is the extent of humility that Jesus showed in the incarnational journey.

Let’s worship this great and humble God as we begin the day today.
Tomorrow we will reflect on understanding Christ’s death as a demonstration of humility.
